Cannabis, what is it? A straight-up guide to the plant, THC, and how it actually works

Let's start with the obvious: you've probably smoked, vaped, or eaten cannabis. Maybe hundreds of times. But if someone asked you "okay, but what actually is it?", could you answer without just pointing at the jar?

No shame if not. Most of us know weed the way we know coffee: we know what it does to us, not really what it is. So let's fix that. No lab coat required, no dissertation. Just a straight, honest breakdown of the cannabis plant, its chemistry, and how it actually gets you high. That's how we like to do things.

What is cannabis, exactly?

Cannabis is a plant. Specifically, it's the flowers, leaves, stems, and seeds of the Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, or Cannabis ruderalis plant, and yes, "marijuana" and "weed" are basically just other names for the same thing 1. That's it. It's not a chemical cooked up in a lab, it's not synthetic. It's a plant humans have been growing and using for thousands of years, across cultures from ancient China to ancient Egypt 2.

What makes the cannabis plant interesting isn't the plant on its own, it's what's inside it. Cannabis contains over 500 different compounds, and more than 120 of those are cannabinoids: the active ingredients responsible for basically everything you feel 2. The two you've definitely heard of:

  • THC (tetrahydrocannabinol); the cannabinoid that gets you high. It's intoxicating, meaning it temporarily changes your mood, thoughts, and perception 3.

  • CBD (cannabidiol); the chill cousin. Non-intoxicating, won't get you stoned, but it's been studied for a range of other effects on the body 3.

There's also THCA, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, the raw, non-intoxicating form of THC that actually sits in the cannabis flower before you light it up. Applying heat (i.e., smoking or vaping) converts THCA into THC. This is the actual chemical reaction happening every time you spark a lighter 4.

How does THC actually affect the body and brain?

Here's where it gets genuinely cool, not just "trust me bro" cool.

Your brain already has a built-in system for this. It's called the endocannabinoid system, and it's a network of receptors your body uses naturally to regulate things like mood, memory, appetite, and pain, with or without cannabis involved 5. When you consume THC, it attaches to these receptors (mainly CB1 receptors), which are packed densely into the parts of the brain that handle pleasure, memory, concentration, coordination, and your sense of time 5.

That's the whole high, right there. THC is essentially speaking a language your brain already understands, it's just saying a lot more, a lot louder, than your body normally would 5. That's also why weed affects things like short-term memory, coordination, and your internal clock: those are exactly the regions THC is knocking on.

CBD, meanwhile, interacts with the same endocannabinoid system but doesn't trigger that intoxicating effect, it just doesn't activate CB1 receptors the way THC does 3.

Why does weed hit differently depending on the strain?

Ever notice two cannabis strains can feel completely different, even at a similar THC percentage? That's not marketing, that's chemistry. Beyond THC and CBD, the plant contains over 200 terpenes; the aromatic compounds responsible for smell and flavor plus flavonoids and other plant nutrients. Researchers believe all of these interact together to shape the overall effect, something often called the "entourage effect" 2. Basically: it's a band, not a solo act. THC might be the frontperson, but the whole lineup shapes the show.

The fine print: potency, safety, and what's still unknown

In the spirit of actually being transparent instead of just saying we are: THC potency in cannabis products today is significantly higher than it was a few decades ago, so if you're used to "how it used to hit," it's worth being mindful of that 6. And newer cannabinoids like Delta-8 haven't been FDA-approved and are considerably less researched than classic THC and CBD, worth knowing before you experiment 3.

The bottom line

Cannabis isn't magic, and it isn't mysterious. It's a plant with a genuinely fascinating chemical toolkit, working with a system your body already has built in. Understanding what's actually going on when you consume it doesn't make the experience less enjoyable. If anything, it makes the whole ritual a little more satisfying. Knowledge is a pretty great addition to the high.
